tmckinney@cityyear.org Professional Experience Americorps (City Year),Detroit MI Tutor ,Full time volunteer work July 2015- Present Tutor middle school students and one High School Student in English and science to improve their overall G.P.A and learning skills.I noticed that when I work with them and tell them that I expect you to do better in ELA and Science, that their grades improve. Holding them accountable and meeting them halfway is key. The high school student that I work with has a learning disability and has a hard time walking down stairs at times. I worked with her everyday after school 1:1 on mainly comprehension on every assignment. Come up with initiatives regarding attendance and behavior to encourage students to be proactive about school.I made a initative where the students who didn’t miss any school in Middle and high school for one month would receive Student Of The Month. At lunch time Read more I had a fun movie for them to watch with popcorn and other treats. Take notes and enter data regarding students growth and information for the school and parents. I was able to inkind $150 worth of free food at a well known fast food chain restaurant for the teacher appreciation that me and my team created. On the days when school was closed I volunteered to help restore homes on the Westside of Detroit, sort clothing at Vista Maria, cut and help create materials at Arts And Scraps for children, feed the homeless at homeless shelters, picking weeds and watering plants in Urban Farms in Detroit and help raise money for DPS schools by volunteering at a flag football game.
