Becoming a para-professional/teacher aide was undoubtedly the best position I have ever experienced but outside of the wonderful jobs I've had working with children, whether it be becoming a big sister at 14, babysitting from to teen through adulthood, or photographing children and families at Sears Portrait Studio, nothing prepared me for working with kids more than becoming a mother myself. At one point I had three children under three years old. My oldest was only 2 when my twins graced the world, so I am full of experience when it comes with working with young multiples. Once I started a family, I decided to stay home for a few years until my children were school age, all while continuing college for Early Childhood Education. When my children were school age, I began to volunteer often as a way to get a feel for the career I was pursuing along Read more with being more involved, and loved it. After getting to know the different teachers, they would joke that I mind as well work at the schools, which is how I later found out I can become a substitute teacher. I was ecstatic to actually be able to benefit from doing something I love and be on the same schedule as my kids. I was a substitute for one school year until I was offered a position the following year for a Kindergarten Teacher Aide. What I loved about my experience as a teacher aide was the consistency of having the same students and routine every day. This allowed me to build a bond with the students and understand both strengths and weaknesses to help them to progress. I enjoy assisting people in any way I can so I found great joy in being an asset to the teacher and help bring my all into the classroom. I also enjoyed being a substitute for the variety of experiencing different grade levels and meeting different students and getting to know the school staff. Although I still work in the school system substituting, now that my babies are middle school age I really miss working with younger kids/babies and building bonds with families, so for this reason I look forward to going back into the babysitting world.
