My full name is Taliyah, but people just call me Tia. I’m 23; my birthday is November 14. I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I’ve graduated with my bachelor’s in early childhood education in hopes of becoming a child speech pathologist. Right now, I’m an elementary school teacher, and I'm moving towards getting my teaching certification and getting into a master’s program so that I can get my degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I love working with children. The thing that makes my heart the warmest is to see them smile, laugh, and be happy. Somehow, it heals my inner child. Having been involved in a volunteer opportunity at Big Brother Big Sister in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, as well as taking courses in my major of Educational Studies at Dickinson College, I am looking forward to broadening my expertise working with children of different ages and backgrounds. Children are complex human Read more beings who deserve the flexibility, responsibility, and coordination of someone who’s in charge of managing their well-being. I’ve learned through my years of studying education and interacting with kids that where they come from and how they grow up dictates what kinds of decisions they will make. Whether those decisions may be informed or not, as the caregiver, having strong core principles and stability helps kids feel safe in relying on you to be their guide while they are figuring out said decisions. I consider myself to be a creative and proactive person. For example, when I worked at Friends of Crown Heights in Brooklyn for the summer, I facilitated recess activities when the children couldn’t go outside to play. In the gym, I did relay races, soccer, and a game of red light green light, all while the teachers sat on the side to supervise. I’ve been a babysitter, a teacher's assistant, a YMCA summer camp supervisor, and an independent day care aide, and along the way I’ve been able to earn my First Aid and CPR certifications and develop a great sense of communication skills, listening skills, and leadership skills. With these qualities and my prior knowledge, I have maintained a strong work ethic.
