I have been working with the deaf and hard of hearing community for over 10 years. I learned the manual alphabet when I was in 4th grade and as time progressed, I developed an appreciation for the culture and language. I wanted to pursue a career servicing the deaf and hard of hearing. I attended Bloomsburg University in Pennsylavnia and graduated in 2002 with a bachelor's in Social Sciences and a minor in Sign Language. After graduating from college, I moved to California and worked at the National Center on Deafness (NCOD) at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) for five years. The NCOD is a student services center that provides communication access and leadership opportunities to students enrolled in the program. I had the opportunity to interact and work daily with deaf and hard of hearing students, staff, and the general public visiting the center. I also provided in-house interpreting Read more for staff. In 2009, I moved back to New York and worked at the Melillo Center for Mental Health in Glen Cove for five years. I served as the Deaf Housing Specialist in the Independent Living Program. I had a case load of 37 consumers, six of which were deaf. I also interpreted for housing and the outpatient clinic. Aside from my work experience, I also enjoy staying in contact with the deaf community. I volunteer annually at the Mill Neck Manor Fall Harvest Festival. I participated in the children's gaming area and had the opportunity to utilize my skills interacting with children and their families. I want to continue servicing the deaf and hard of hearing community and working with children
