My name is Melanie (they/them) and I moved to Portland a little over a year ago from Chicago! Having worked as a babysitter for many years, volunteering at The Cove School for nine years (elementary through high school age), volunteering at a sunday youth program (3-5 year olds), teaching music for a year at an after school program (7-9 year olds), working as a camp counselor (7-13 years old) and doing stage management and ADA/Accessibility advising for an all age inclusive dance company, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with kids of all ages. I’m very passionate about accessibility, self-advocacy and the allowance for multiplicity of self, and recognize that these skills of self recognition, value and inclusiveness are incredibly important in childhood and adolescence, creating the foundation for how we view ourselves and others into the beginning stages of adulthood. I believe in creating an environment in which kids can Read more be silly, play and express themselves, with the development of listening and communication skills rooted in desire rather than necessity. I was raised by a teacher who instilled these values in me, and I’ve enjoyed finding my own style within that framework. I will be going back to school in the fall to pursue a liberal arts education that focuses on the arts, humanities and social sciences. I myself am proudly AuDHD (Autistic + ADHD) and am interested in creating a body of filmed and written work that can address the intersections of disability, gender and sexuality, utilizing music is as mediator and translator of one’s own experience existing at said crossroads. I have a valid driver’s license and am CPR and First Aid certified. I look forward to connecting with folks in the community!
