Hi! My name is Clarissa, and I am a graduate of Pratt Institute. I currently work at a STEAM-based* after-school program called Maker Jawn, where I mentor inner-city kids from ages 5-13 by providing resources, tools, and an encouraging space for their interest-driven projects. At Maker Jawn, we build, paint, sculpt, experiment, write and create! *(STEAM is an educational acronym which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. It describes the type of curriculum we write and the skills we encourage.) I began working with children as a college student, where I spent my first summer off working as a camp counselor for elementary schoolers at Dutchess Arts Camp in upstate New York. There, I discovered my affinity for working with children and my passion for helping them explore, imagine, and create. The following summer, I worked at Odyssey Teen Camp, an alternative sleepaway camp where I led classes Read more in yoga, ceramics, painting, collage, and meditation. I have worked at this camp every year since 2012 in varying capacities, most recently as their Program Director in 2015. I am returning this coming summer to be their Program Director once more! In addition to these experiences, I have also worked two summers (2014-2015) at The Handwork Studio, an arts program based in Narberth. Here I taught children ages 5-11 various fabrics arts, such as knitting, sewing, embroidering, and needle-felting. Lastly, my longest experience so far in caring for children has been the 8 months I spent nannying for 2 boys in Brooklyn, one 7-year-old and one 12-year-old. My duties included bringing the boys home from school, preparing their dinners, and helping them finish their homework. Of course, there was always time for playing with stuffed animals or drawing as well! I am comfortable setting boundaries with children, and I feel that making lasting, authentic connections is one of the best aspects of childcare. I have my PA State background check, an FBI Fingerprint Clearance, and my PA Child Abuse Clearance certificates, all of which are clean.
