I am fluent in both English & Spanish. I hold a dual-bachelors degree in Spanish/Hispanic Cultures & Human Communication from Juniata College (in Central PA). I enjoy travel, reading, and studying languages. I am outgoing and energetic. I have CPR/First-Aid Certification from the American Heart Association. In high school, I was an aquatics instructor/lifeguard for the YMCA for children aged 2+ and adults. Some of my students had physical disabilities, like autism or deafness. For one summer during college, I was a camp counselor at a Girl Scout camp near Washington, D.C. At the camp, we worked to mesh wilderness and modern lifestyles. While living in Spain in fall 2011, I taught English to children aged 2-16. During my Peace Corps service in Paraguay, I established a library at the school and monitered children aged 4-18. I also started a book club for different aged children. Aside from my formal Read more work with children, I have also cared for children in private homes. One family I babysat for had three children under the age of 8 and one of which suffered from autism. Several years ago, I also cared for my two young cousins. In college, I babysat my academic advisor's 8 year old daughter a few days each week. In Paraguay, I watched over the children in my host family, aged 1-6. I really enjoy working with children and facilitating their creativity. I believe children and adults have much to teach each other, and I am always surprised with new insights from younger people. I often find that children can confide in me their troubles and I like that they trust me enough to share personal details. Watching over children is not something I do passively, but actively. I enjoy being a participant in the growth and development process.
