I have been a licensed day care provider, a nanny, a teacher and a tutor. Whatever I do, I focus on the needs of the child, and on providing enriching educational opportunities. When I was a nanny to two small boys, I brought books, games and toys from my home each day, to augment their daily experiences. The boys had some health issues and as a result, had become very picky eaters. I had them help me prepare their meals, which not only taught them many different things- ingredients, following a recipe, introduction to fractions, etc., but awakened their interest in trying new and healthier foods. We explored different art media, science experiments and fun activities. Whenever we discussed a new topic (which was often), I would try to bring relevant children's books on the subject(s) from my home library, when next I came to see them. We would visit the library or museums, and I had them help me with everyday activities around their home. This gives the children a sense of responsibility and self- reliance.
