I have been babysitting since I was a young teenager. Quite a few years have past since then. I am married and have three daughters who have blessed me with 7 grandchildren who I have had a hand in raising. I've raised a string of neighborhood children from 1st and 2nd born throughout my community. This has carried a reputation that has resulted in being more or less a "Pied Piper" within the neighborhood. All my neighbor's and their children call me "Nanny Jan." I enjoy volunteering to take children to libraries, sponsor sleepovers while parents enjoy a night off or a weekend away, or lending a helping hand during an unexpected family emergency. We interviewed Jan in March and she had great references from clients who worked with her a few years ago. We were looking to establish a long term partnership and started her employment last week finding out about a few doctor visits that were not shared with us previously. We still wet ahead with an open mind but we are back to nanny search within one week of her employment. She is nice, punctual and well intentioned but is not able to keep up with her health conditions. I wish she had been more transparent about this. She just texted the morning of her doctor’s appointment that she cannot make it after even though we had discussed her hours. She wasn’t apologetic and didn’t even offer a back up plan. At this point, she should consider taking only short babysitting gigs such as watching the kids for 2-3 hours at the most vs applying for a full time nanny position.
