Profile I am a professional counselor, licensed and certified since 2012. I completed graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Most of my work has been with children aged 2 and older, applying my knowledge and skills in child development, play therapy, and engaging with children who do not use language, or speak another language. The child’s parents are always involved and make decisions. Typically, I leave a brief “progress report” for every day/visit, to account for what took place and keep the parents informed. I have had background checks every other year or so in the past ten years, as required by my employers in the education, health & human services field. Born and raised in a French-speaking environment in Montréal, Canada, I was a high-achiever in school and believed in the benefits of multi-lingual skills. This interest continued throughout undergraduate studies at Université de Montréal, where I Read more obtained a BS in Business. I moved to the USA in my late twenties to marry an American. We lived in California, US Virgin Islands, and Virginia. Even though the marriage ended, Virginia had become my home. My career in business continued in Williamsburg and then in Richmond, where I pursued education for a second career as a counselor, because I love assisting people of all ages to develop and learn. In Charlottesville for 2 years now, I have worked with children and adults who are blind or have vision impairment, also to assist them in learning with a variety of accommodations such as computer technology. I’ve also worked at UVA as a nanny for a special event welcoming new faculty members coming from many different countries. Several children did not speak English, but play, games and snacks with fellow children and caring adults ensured their comfort and safety while their parents enjoyed dinner with high-ranking faculty. I do not have children, but I have a cat 'Sophie' as a wise, sweet companion. I am a mature, lively 60 year old woman who loves interacting with people from diverse cultures or languages. I only know a few Japanese words, and I would certainly like to know more! In many ways, I can relate to some of the challenges encountered, and hope to develop trust and a sense of safety in a new environment.
