Dementia Parent

My mother is very opposed to "needing" help or to admit that she needs any help. My father is caring for her on his own and we need someone with experience and willing to act like they are there as a FRIEND not a care giver. This is new to us so we are not sure how much these types of services cost so open for guidance. He is still adamant that he has it under control now, but we would like to start talking to someone so that a plan is in place because it isn't long before he will need help. Maybe just once a week to start, we would like to try to get her engaged in activities but she can be hard to handle. My Father wants to attend an event Dec 19 and if she refuses to go, we are worried he will miss it. Is there "back up" care if she is having a bad day and will not leave the house when he has to make an appointment or something?
