Specializing in "one-time," hotel/wedding guest infant and child care. I'm more interested in occasional than regularly scheduled 'gigs'. Yikes! Your child is ill and can't go to day care or school and you can't miss work? I'm your gal! I'll bring board games, books, art projects and lots of love. It's like having an Aunt or 'extra Grandma' nearby.... During the School Year and summer, I am available part-time. I have many years of experience with newborns through teens and 15 years as a public school teacher, mostly K-2nd (now retired). I have more experience with boys, including my own eighteen-year old son, who has Asperger's. As a 'tomboy' growing up, and living with a son, I relate well with boys' sometimes silly energy. I love imaginary play, to dance with scarves, etc. I played with Barbie's, but to be honest, am not much of a "girly-girl" type. My first Read more heroines were Nancy Drew and Harriet the Spy. I love baseball, swimming (pool and ocean), bicycling, gardening and reading. A year ago, we said goodbye to our 14 year-old Lab mix dog who was with us since he was a puppy. I also pet sit in the pet/guardian's home. I am comfortable with all kinds of pets and have also had cats in the past. I am both fun and firm; employ Positive Discipline, and, as needed, re-direct children, through singing, art and other humorous methods. I don't use candy as a reward, nor would I ever withhold food as a "punishment". My 'career' as and strong commitment to volunteering began with with 15 years in Girl Scouts, helping run a student-volunteer program in college, serving as a full-time volunteer for two years between 'careers' as a college student, etc.... I have done public speaking regarding Asperger's, including workshops for school bus drivers. A Spanish-Bilingual elementary school teacher for many years, I am fluent... to the point where sometimes I forget to "switch back to English". :-). I love to read with children and my strong commitment to literacy includes doing so from "day one," the day of birth! Treat a child as a reader and s/he will fall in love with books... I know many games and songs, everything from finger-play for little ones to playing baseball, soccer, art and drama, etc., with all ages, to board games with older kids, especially on those rainy days. My emphasis is always on activity; Never to use television, video or computer games as a babysitter!!
