My name is Mervatte and I have 3 children of my own. My oldest has graduated from UC Berkeley, my middle is about to start her first quarter at UCLA this summer, and my youngest is starting high school. I believe that our children are our future leaders, doctors, attorneys, teachers, programmers, moms and dads, nurses....etc. Having raised 3 children of my own, and having been a nanny and a babysitter for many years, I can confidently tell you that our children are the product of our investment in them. It starts while they're infants, when you hold them, sing to them, love them, and sometimes, rock them to sleep, is when they feel secure and cuddled, just like in their mommy's tummy. They feel safe. As they become toddlers and very inquisitive, wanting to know everything and go into every drawer and cabinet, taking everything out, while everyone is Read more screaming "I just finished putting that away", they don't mean to make life more difficult, they just want to know and learn sounds, colors, shapes, and they are intrigued by different combinations and equations! Honestly, this is a great time to teach them and let them explore and get on the floor with them and play with them, showing them what things do and how they work. By doing that, you're helping them to become critical thinkers, develop love for knowledge and creativity. As they become elementary age, their interests, likes and dislikes are very clear (for the most part). They need to see affirmation, loved, and respect. They don't like to be yelled at and made fun of. They want their opinion to matter to mom and dad and others around them. They need people to know that they're very independent and yes, "they can do it". Then comes the teen-age years :) Teens are just in between stages, no longer children and young adults yet. They often feel disrespected, unwanted, not trusted, and for some of these reasons, they start acting out how we as adults feel about them. They just need to be loved, respected, uplifted, encouraged, and told what a great job they're doing. For the past 10 years, I have worked as a College Counselor at a college prep private school K-12, teaching, guiding, advising and preparing students for college. I'm very passionate about working with children/young adults and believe that each child is a very unique individual who wants to be heard, loved, respected and nurtured by the adults in his/her life.
