My name is Nev. I am 24 years old. I have my bachelors from fresno state. I severed as an Ameri-Corps Jumpstart crops member, where I worked with pre-school children for one 1yr teaching literacy. I have been baby sitting children over 5 years now. I am first aid and CPR certified. My appreciation and understanding of various cultures that have provided me with the insight to effectively practice service in need in our diverse nation today. I have the knowledge of dealing and serving others from different parts of the world that I have encountered by living in Michigan, Canada and India. I have diverse knowledge of being able to speak Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and American Sign Language. In addition, my undergraduate experience as a Liberal Studies major has exposed me to diverse disciplines, including sociology, psychology, history, philosophy, and provided me with a solid interdisciplinary background. My faith-based Read more socialization lead to pursue a concentration in Urban Civic Education within my Liberal Studies major. My ability to apply my understanding of liberal arts aspect, is a vital building block to my foundation as a baby sitter. I strongly believe people have not truly lived until they have selflessly given to another individual. I did not fully comprehend the importance of this theory until becoming an AmeriCorps member with Jumpstart. While tutoring, I was fortunate to work with a 3-year old girl of Chinese descent. My commitment to “paying it forward” and showing this young child the same love and attention that my Kindergarten teacher showed me was at the forefront of my mind. Due to her limited English proficiency, I utilized American Sign Language to communicate along with English, and over the course of the past two months, she has gone from barely communicating at all to speaking in complete sentences. She also now understands more and is responsive to questions. I wasn’t sure what to expect from my tutoring experiences, but after spending more than two months with my little friend, I knew the smiles she gave, the conversations we shared, and the learning we both underwent left me feeling gratified and a sense of achievement. I was able to keep a record of her developmental growth. This amazing opportunity lead me to be a wonderful leader, and to take on responsibilities and guide my young friends at the preschool site.
