There is no work more important than nurturing the future generation to come. I believe that in being a nanny I am in the unique position to impact a child's life who will enter the world that much more loved and capable. It takes a village not only to rear children but to provide multiple points of contact wherein children can rely on their immediate community. It is important for a child to have family, friends, caregivers and mentors to guide them along their unique path to offer support so that they may never feel alone. I believe children should be respected and given the opportunity to voice their opinions as any adult. Clear communication is necessary to raise children into adults who know how to respect their personal boundaries and values. I believe maintaining a steady boundary is important when, for example, the child wants to stay up past Read more bedtime or is acting in an unfavorable manner. It can be difficult for a young mind to grasp what an adult might already accept as it relates to what is best for their health and safety. I believe it is then my responsibility and opportunity to maintain and encourage a healthy lifestyle by explaining WHY a certain rule is in use. An example of this might sound like: "We want to eat healthy snacks like apples in order to feel lots of energy to swing EXTRA high on the playground’s swing set this afternoon. Do you like to swing high?" This kind of result based negotiation can create a compelling argument for the child who will then eat some of their healthy snack while also developing a positive association with food to usable energy. I have expertise in RIE methodologies as well Montesorri, which engage in child-led play and sensitive observation of each child's unique developmental timeline. Others have told me I have a gift for not only hearing but actively listening to others. Presence (via undivided attention) is critical and demonstrates to the children in my care that the time we share is valuable to me. This looks like running around the playground together, never sitting on the sidelines on my phone! I am honest and others often interpret that and in return speak to me with matched candidness. An example of honest communication might sound like saying "I know you didn't intend to, but when you said X it hurt my feelings. Can we try to communicate differently moving forward?" Life is enjoyed most through intimate personal connections and I believe that being a childcare provider is an opportunity worth celebrating.
