A person could take a text file, split it into a running list of 200 characters, and count the number of complete words (either starting or ending a line, or ending in a punctuation mark or space — hmm, you’d actually want to use 201 characters to test what the last character in the set is, if it’s a letter then don’t count the word, if it’s a space or punctuation mark or end of the line, then do) in each list. Then plot out the histogram and take various univariate statistics. A peculiar but fun project if you took texts from different languages and different time periods. There are tools in python to do this. You might have a few head scratching moments about how to think about UTF-8 character sets, as they are encoded not in 8 bits but in 8 bits + 4 bits for accents, other Read more alphabets, etc.
