When I was in middle school, I passed out hundreds of flyers around my neighborhood so I could take part in the babysitting trade. I received numerous calls from interested families and attended a Babysitter’s Training course with First Aid/CPR through the Red Cross so I could begin. My love for kids grew with each babysitting job as I overcame presented challenges and developed close ties with the families over the next seven years. During this time, I have worked extensively with infants through teenagers. It was a no-brainer to interview for a camp counselor position at the summer camp I adored as a child. I continued this position at Rollins College every summer for three years. My favorite classes to co-teach include swimming, sailing, theatre, art, creative writing, music and tennis. The summer before leaving for college, I split my time between Rollins College and teaching swimming lessons to Read more children at the University of Miami. As a junior in high school, I took on a nanny job for two young girls. I was picking them up from school everyday, driving them to activities, running errands for the mother, helping them with their homework and keeping up the house. During this job, I learned the impact I could have when working very closely with children on a daily basis. I'm a third-year student at the University of Florida. I have been a weekly volunteer at a child development center affiliated with the university called Baby Gators. I have recently renewed my CPR training through the Red Cross. As a caregiver, I'm extremely fascinated by a child's endless curiosity and imagination. Helping a child better understand the world around them and actively developing their passions and interests is so rewarding to me. Being a part of this magic is truly inspiring. I am very active and a lover of the outdoors. Some of my fondest experiences have been on excursions with the Travel and Recreation Program at my university. My favorite activities include exploring, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, climbing, gymnastics, & bike riding. Creative outlets are a deep passion of mine, from expressive arts to visual mediums such as photography. This summer, I moved to Georgetown and will be continuing my studies through UF's online program. My love for children and adventure is undeniable. I believe I would be a valuable contribution to a child's life and I am constantly learning with each unique experience with a family.

Carol is kind and well meaning. My children were always safe. That said, the one month she worked with us was incredibly stressful because of numerous surprises affecting her hours or availability. 1. Renegotiated start date 48 hours before first day. (ok, fine) 2. Asked for three afternoons off to go babysit for someone else. I said no. (fine but really odd since I needed her to babysit my kids (duh).) 3. Went home sick and called off for next day when I would be out of town meeting with my board. (fine, these things happen but frantic on our side). 4. In a text message while still out sick, asks to take the coming week off as vacation. (NOT fine. At this point she'd only worked for us 9 days, had already taken her sick day, and then asked for 4 days off. I said no). 5. Calls in sick each day for 3 of the 4 days she had wanted as vacation. (not fine. I'm pretty sure that's too big a coincidence. It's also a nightmare to handle that kind of unpredictability.) 6. Having worked 2 more days, sends an email asking for a full renegotiation of her work schedule that would require me utterly changing my own work (including my no longer working afternoons and giving up the 4 day work week that allows me time with my kids) Bottom line: Carol is kind and well-meaning but did not have the wisdom to realize that a nanny job is a commitment to make life work for the parents of the family by creating a totally stable, no-brainer childcare situation for their kids. This was more like being caught in a suspense novel where what was suspenseful was what part of your childcare would suddenly disappear.
