As the second of five children, I joke that mothering was bred into me. I spent my life playing mother to my younger siblings, and by the time I was teenager, I began taking care of other children for pay. From Sunday school with toddlers to evenings sitting with two autistic adolescents, I slowly came to understand my role in homes where regular care was offered, and formed a skillset allowing me to be "fun" for kids, while offering support to parents and caregivers. In the last year, I have left the "professional" field and decided to focus solely on child care, namely, my position as a full time nanny to two boys, age 4 and 1.5. We have navigated preschool pick up and drop off; breakfast, lunches, snacks, and occasionally dinner; "field trips" to libraries, parks, etc. I have also been able to offer additional support by coordinating with Read more parents during bouts of illness for the boys, sleep overs, and business trips out of state, stepping in for extra hours to keep routines in tact. Most importantly, I have fallen in love with the unpredictable, but fierce way that children interact with their worlds, and the surprising ways that they show love back.
