Before college, I spent two years leading a second-grade class in an after-school program focused on homework assistance and service learning. After that program, I was an elementary school substitute teacher for a year. In college, I was the team leader for an early literacy program for children aged 3-4, often adapting our lessons to work with young children who were becoming bilingual. During a college internship I worked with middle schoolers who had emotional and behavioral disorders. We focused calming down during stressful times, as well as tutoring to bring them up to date on course work. During this internship, I began nannying part time. I worked for two families, both with elementary age children. I was a "big" with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. I met weekly with an 11-year old. We are equally nerdy and spent a lot of time planning our respective Halloween costumes and Read more creating models of our favorite characters. For two years I worked at a drop-off daycare program. There I gained more experience with young children, primary 6 mon. to 3 years. I planned a curriculum around cognitive skills, language and literacy skills, fine and gross motor functions, executive functioning and sensory awareness. I also worked as the assistant first-grade teacher at an after school program that focuses on social-emotional learning. In that role, I planned engaging activities and addressed the emotional needs of students in the program. For a year my wife and I lived in Spain and traveled around Europe and to Morocco (the photo above). I believe that any interaction with a child must not be taken for granted. When working with children I make sure to use language that is developmentally beneficial; encouraging vocabulary growth, while also being clear with my expectations. I believe in setting high expectations and building goals upon previous successes, and never shaming a child as they are learning. I believe empathic authority is important to establishing myself as a caregiver who is energetic and fun, but most importantly prioritizes their well-being. I like to create and encourage activities that children have shown interest in, giving them opportunities to deepen their understanding of a subject. I believe that children's creativity is wonderful and their imaginations are astonishing. As a caregiver I can be expected to be a loving listener and an enthusiastic partner in play.

Dan is a lovely guy with tons of experience with children. He spent an evening with our 20-month-old, and we'd definitely book him again.
