I have been taking care of and teaching children since I was one. I have 19 nieces and nephews, and a stepdaughter of my own. When I was 12 I became a Red Cross certified babysitter, and I became a Sunday school teacher for 3-5 year olds. I actively babysat throughout my teen years for my family and families from the community. I was a Sunday school teacher again from 2013-2015 for a 2-4 year old class. As a young adult I worked at a traveling day camp in the Detroit area. I was a camp counselor and was responsible for a new group of 15-20 children, aged 5-12 each week. From 2016-2017 I worked as a part time nanny for a friend going through a rough patch. I would be at their home at 6:30am to wake the children and get the older 2 ready for school, including making Read more and serving breakfast. The youngest was still a toddler so after dropping the older 2 off at school I would take the youngest back home and stay with him until noon. My time with the youngest was spent doing learning time (age appropriate flash cards), reading, and playtime. I also maintained light housekeeping and would do the children’s laundry when asked. I have a stepdaughter from my late husband. While I don’t have biological children of my own she taught me what it means to be a parent and the love a parent has for their child. I say this because it’s important to me that anyone I trust to take care of her understands the gravity of that task. I have a big heart for children and keeping children safe is one of my driving forces in life. I see it as my duty to not only provide safety, but help children to thrive and learn who they are. It is beautiful getting to watch a child’s mind and personality develop. They are the adults of tomorrow and this not a job I take lightly. I am empathetic and nonjudgmental. I encourage children and parents both to express themselves and teach them ways to appropriately express themselves if needed. Additionally, I like to encourage children to problem solve, think critically, and use their imagination and creativity. I believe these are all crucial to everyone’s personal development, child and adult alike.
