I majored in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Early Childhood Services in which I worked with young children in daycares. I am frequently taking care of 6 nieces and nephews ages 4 and under and over 30 of my cousins' young children. It is so fun to watch the new generation grow! I have served people of all ages and abilities through jobs, camps, practicums through daycares, after-school programs, youth ministry, and mission work. I helped people bathe, soothed children out of panic attacks, congratulated adults with Down syndrome on their beautiful art projects, mentored teenagers, sang with senior citizens, and even attempted to dance hip-hop with young girls. My ability to empathize with diverse populations, collaborate with a team, and learn from my mistakes makes me comfortable in unpredictable situations. I have found again and again that if I am vulnerable and receptive enough to learn Read more from every individual, I am able to help that person improve and achieve their goals. When I was a camp counselor at Elks Camp Grassick, I took care of an 11-year-old boy with Down’s Syndrome. Between swimming and suppertime, he ran out of the cabin and hid next to the playground. I understood that he needed to calm down, so I sent the other boys to dinner with my co-counselor and gave the boy 5-minutes alone before I approached him. I had two options, I could admonish him and walk him to dinner so we could be there on time, or I could let him surprise me. I knew he loved sports so I picked up a basketball and started making some terrible shots. He slowly brought his head up and started laughing. “No, that is not how you do it!” “Do you think you can show me how?” I challenged. After a few minutes of playing his version of a proper layup, which involved an unusual amount of summersaults and spinning, I started to earn his trust. He confided why he was upset and went to dinner happily. As a nanny, I hope to show people their potential for success through developing evidence-based treatment objectives. but I also want be humble enough to move at each client’s optimal pace. My camper taught me that everyone benefits from a balance of structure and creativity. In my career, I sincerely hope that I never get so caught up in goals that I forget how to play and empathize.
