Hello, I grew up on eastern Long Island where there wasn't much to do except be outside with your siblings, make terrariums, write in journals and chase your dogs. Despite livining in the city for many years, I still hold that upbrigning dear to my heart. I am the oldest of 4 children and being a leader and teacher is instilled in my being. You will find me in Brooklyn Heights where I live, reading, writing, hiking, and trying to pet other people's dogs as much as I possibly can. While pursuing my MFA in Poetry and Creative Writing I worked for two families in Brooklyn and in the summers abroad in London. I also nannied for a third family in Brooklyn for 4 years after graduate school and while I was teaching composition at Hofstra University. I have cared for infants - 7 year olds. For the last 3 Read more years I have been teaching science, language arts, and poetry to grades 4-6 (ages 9-12). I am also a NYC certified English Education teacher for grades 7-12. I have quite a range of experience with children from babies to teenagers. I am CPR certified infant-adult. I think what makes working with children so meaningful is the ability to watch them grow over time. As a teacher in a Montessori school, I get to spend three years with the same students--something I realize I came to love while nannying. At the moment, I am soon to begin summer vacation and would love to find a temporary position with a family for regular summer hours or just sporadic days and times. I'm flexible. This could transition into the next year for evening date-night-out or weekends. I'm still close with the families I cared for, and I am the type of sitter who cherishes those bonds with kids who I cared for at 5 months old--and are now 7 or 8 years old! In addition to teaching and writing/publishing poetry, I am also a runner. I periodically enter and train for small races. I'm comfortable with smaller dogs, cooking light meals, and tidying up. I'm also flexible to disciplining strategies and working with parents to find the best way to handle children's needs and growth. I am especially firm when it comes to safety. The teacher in me knows how to set boundaries but also form a relationship of trust with a child. I have a sense of humor, even if it is a little cheesy at times (or so my saavy 6th graders tell me...)
