I have a BA in Childhood Studies from Rutgers (graduating summa cum laude, 4.0 and earning the Outstanding Senior Award in Childhood Studies). This education offered a multidisciplinary approach to the social sciences that could range from early childhood developmental psychology, to the study of children’s literature, to philosophical issues of the educational system, or the laws and logic involving children’s rights; all of this with a focus on children as agents. I currently have 8 months (Nov. 2019 to Jun. 2020) of professional caregiver experience working with children (ranging 5 months to 18 years) as a client advocate in Nome, Alaska for the Nome Children's Home, which is a temporary shelter and treatment facility for children awaiting permanent placement, reunification or completion of their child services’ treatment plan. As an advocate, I was responsible for providing therapeutic interactions and supervision to youth who were placed in the home; my Read more duties included implementing appropriate social, educational and recreational strategies with the youth, timely documentation, home security, household duties, de-briefing sessions, and crisis intervention. Prior to that, I had worked for years as a fine dining server in Philadelphia, as well as, manual labor jobs including irrigation, sales, and even gold mining on the Bering Sea (during some of my time in Alaska). My time as a client advocate in Nome was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life - a job where I felt that I actually made a difference in real time and, in some small way, saved the kids from the chain of trauma that had previously molded their trust and development. Life has brought me back to the east coast, my fiancé has taken a clinical psychologist position at the Northport VA, but I am looking to further my caregiving experience and continuing to foster a loving, trusting environment by which children can grow and realize their agency.
