Hi, I have recently just moved back from being abroad. I was living in Thailand and New Zealand. In both countries, I was working with children. I was working at a school in Thailand and teaching kids from the ages of 3 up to 7. It was mostly play and teaching the younger kids their ABC's and numbers, but with the older kids, I was teaching them english, science, social studies, math, health, and writing. Pretty advanced stuff for seven year olds! A lot of my time in the classroom involved classroom management, though, because of their young age. It's very hard to get young kids to concentrate and learn! So, to keep them engaged and behaved, I would often have to come up with fun activities that were also conducive to learning. In New Zealand, I was a full-time live-in nanny. The first family had a four year old Read more boy and a five year old girl. A lot of what I did with them was get them ready for school, make breakfast, drive them to school, pick-ups, and then afternoon entertainment and dinner. They were lovely children, and very precocious, but it took a while to earn their respect. I found that consistency was key. If I said something--for example, if you do ____, then you will not be able to play with _____--I found it most important that you carry it out. I also found that if I was willing to pay attention and listen and engage, they were more likely to warm up to me and want to be around me. I also lived with a family in New Zealand who had three girls--nine, eleven, and twelve. I did the same thing with these children as I did with the previous family. It was very difficult because I realized how firm I had to be with them. They were all at the age where attitude was becoming a problem and easily found ways to manipulate them. Again, consistency and firmness was key with them. I wanted to play with them and be kind, but you have to set boundaries when they push too far, and you have to catch it quickly and shut it down when they do try to cross those boundaries. Yet again, I found if I was enthusiastic and listened to them, they would find it in their best interest to behave.
