I grew up in the suburbs of Portland with my mother, father, little sister, and our many pets. My sister is home-schooled (I was not), and I still help with math and English exercises and am a capable tutor. I speak fluent Portuguese and conversational Spanish. Babysitting is something I have always loved. In middle school, I jumped at the chance to take Red Cross babysitter’s training course and certify myself so I’d have an excuse to let all my neighbors know I could officially watch their kids now, as opposed to just casually. My parent’s neighborhood was one of growing families, and I became the Neighborhood’s go-to sitter. Being with children is something I enjoy and look forward to, and I continue to seek it out in my employment opportunities. I worked as a lifeguard/Swim Instructor for a total of about 8 years, teaching young children and people of Read more all ages, including those with various disabilities; I still consider it the most rewarding job I’ve worked to date! In addition to the many ways working at the pool helped me learn to be a safer and more effective caregiver, it was a unique glimpse into the learning process of young people and the challenges of communicating effectively with kids of all ages. There are kids who are terrified of the water, kids who love it and don’t understand its inherent dangers, and kids who do the most random unpredictable things. As an instructor, you’re tasked with managing them all, teaching life skills, and making it a fun experience for everyone involved. I had to understand the best ways to keep children on task and how to make it fun. If they can see their accomplishments and all the progress they’ve made, they light up and you can see how proud of themselves they are. As a lifeguard, one thing I initially struggled with was enforcing rules when it was unpleasant to do so. I never wanted to be “that mean lifeguard” who is too strict to allow anyone to have any fun. Over the years, I’ve learned to enforce rules in a positive way, by presenting what children consider limitations to their fun as opportunities to explore something new and explaining why caution is important…. I am confident in my ability to provide the standard of care that you’ve always wanted for your children. Feel free to look at my nannying and pet-sitting profiles, and message me with any questions you may have!
