Hello! My name is a Jess and I am a current college student home for the summer. I love children and have experience working with a variety of ages, backgrounds, and special needs. Since I was 12, I've babysat for a variety of ages and co- coordinated a summer camp at my house for 5 years for 25+ children between the ages of 4-12. Our camp used theatre, song, storytelling, games, education and the arts to empower campers to make a positive impact in the world around them. At 13, I also began assisting a refugee family from Burundi before and after school as well as on most weekends. Every day after school, I would babysat the 6 kids while my mother took the parents on errands and often remained alone with them until 10 or 11 at night. During this time, I made dinner, tutored them in English, assisted Read more with homework, changed diapers, cleaned and put the 4 youngest girls to bed. By 14, I also picked them up for school, dressed them, and assisted them during the school day due to their language barriers. The 2 boys, though older, both have disabilities and needed special care. Bosco, deaf, began learning ASL with me and Parufe, mentally handicapped, practiced everyday care practices. I remain very involved with them and their new girl, Emeline, who soon to be 4 years old (already!). Even while away in college, I call them regularly and continue to tutor them in all subjects. During high school, I also regularly babysat twin boys, Sam and Gabe. My first night with them they turned 3 years old and I continue to babysit for them whenever I can. I also briefly nannied for a 15 year old and her sister with down syndrome and volunteered at Providence Child Center with the severely handicapped children's wing. Last summer, I babysat 18 month old twins, Ulu and Greta, while taking courses at PSU on the side. I love them much so very much and see them as much as I can. While it broke my heart to leave them after the summer, they now have a wonderful new nanny and are soon transitioning into a wonderful new daycare center. Over this past semester, I worked with a afterschool program in MA to run a radical theatre program. In school, I've taken courses on childhood development, youth theatre, and education. I continue to have a passion for working with children and would be honored to spend time getting to know your family!
