Observing my aunt's perseverance in raising her daughter with intellectual disability motivated me to become a caretaker with respect for the dignity of all individuals I serve. I love to learn with the children in my care and help meet their personal needs, accepting that challenges are a valuable part of my job. Because parents are the experts on their children, I seek to diligently follow care-taking directions provided by all parents I'm employed by. For 5 weeks during the summers of 2008-2010, I served as a one-on-one volunteer caretaker to children with various physical/intellectual disabilities. Because these children were spending sessions in a specialized summer camp setting, my role was to help meet these children's personal needs so that they could spend as much time as possible having fun, reaching goals, and building friendships. Over the course of 495 hours, I assisted children with feeding, toileting/diapering, overnight care, dressing, Read more bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, wheelchair lifting, and recreational activities. My duties also included keeping a record of these children's daily activities, maintaining their personal belongings, and keeping their living spaces clean. Since her birth in 2004 until present day, I have provided daily and overnight care to my younger sister. In her infancy, my duties included feeding, bathing, dressing, diapering, tooth brushing, and helping maintain her sleep schedule. As she grew, I assisted my sister with toilet training, prepared her meals, and explored various fun activities with her. Today I help her with homework assignments, pick her up from school, prepare her meals and assist her as needed with her daily routine.
