Hi, my name is Elle and I am currently working on a second Bachelor’s degree, this time in Aerospace Engineering at UVA. Originally from NOVA, I worked with a family while completing my first degree (English, thought I wanted to be an attorney and they don’t offer pre-law as a major) at George Mason. When I started with their family, it was with a 9-month old girl and when I finished (they moved) there were two girls, a 3 y/o and a 2 y/o that were, in my heart, my little sisters. Since then (roughly 2013) the majority of my time has been dedicated to either real estate or a continuation of schoolwork— and I dearly miss the interaction with kids! I have three nieces and two nephews I spent 5 years helping with, but now they’re all grown up! 🥰 Things know about my “sitter-style”: I don’t use “baby Read more talk” with children; I speak to them as if they are miniature adults. I believe this fosters learning, especially when it comes to reading/writing correctly. I also do not tolerate disrespect or selfishness, so if there are multiple children please be aware that I will intervene if any toy-guarding (or toy-snatching), back-talk, or name-calling occurs. My “punishment style” is a bit different than most; I seldom use time-outs or isolation as correctional behavior tactics. Instead, I speak with the child and ask them to explain why they chose their behavior and what they meant to accomplish by it. In my experience, children are far more self-aware and intuitive then they are traditionally given credit for. (I.E., when one child takes a toy from another, they often can identify that they took it simply because they wanted it, but they also acknowledge that they would not want the same behavior done to them. Nearly always, they will return the toy to the other child and apologize.) I prefer a maximum of 2 children because otherwise my ability to keep eyes on them at all times is compromised. Im semi-fluent in Spanish and fond of the outdoors, from playgrounds to pools—and as a former lifeguard I have been first aid/cpr certified many times in previous years. I am looking for a short-term position from now until mid-July (potentially longer depending on flexibility/needs), but am totally open to working full time hours!
