I believe that children are thirsty to know more about their world and I am comfortable with allowing them to explore their world with adults as facilitators of their discoveries. I see difficult moments and meltdowns as an opportunity to grow a child's emotional toolkit. Isolation and "time-outs" in my view, break bonds of trust between children and adults; this can inadvertently tell a child that there is something inherently wrong with the way that they are, rather than how they behaved. I do, however, encourage children to acknowledge when they might need space, and give them the power and voice to express that in a safe way.
