I have been lucky enough to work for one fantastic family for nearly eight years who have sadly outgrown their need for a nanny. For 18 months of this time, we were joined by a second family, whom I remain close with to this day. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to work with many other families on a temporary or part-time basis. As a nanny, I love being able to experience the joy and wonder that is brought by seeing things through the lens of childhood. All of the challenges of caring for children are made more than worth it when I get to see their joyful faces of accomplishment when they first succeed at something new. From birth, each child is a unique individual who is deserving of respect. My childcare philosophy is based on that core belief. Fostering age-appropriate independence and building life skills is a priority for any child in my care. Facilitating time for children of all ages to have plenty of unstructured, independent play is something I care about passionately. Research shows us that giving kids time for self-directed free-play is profoundly beneficial. In terms of more structured activities, I particularly love doing arts and crafts projects with kids. The messier, the better! More often than not, these projects bridge into exciting science lessons. Reading aloud to children is also very important to me. Academically, the benefits of reading to kids are far-reaching and long-lasting. When hitting a rough patch, my goal for discipline is learning and growth. As such, I use natural and logical consequences as much as possible. My determination and no-nonsense style allow me to hold firm boundaries, reducing future conflicts. Most of all, I believe in setting children up for behavioral success. For babies and very young children, this usually means maintaining age-appropriate environments and redirection when necessary. For older kids, I’m careful to be very clear about my expectations and what consequences they might encounter for the different choices they’ll face. Finally, in a world filled with social inequality and injustice, I firmly believe I must help reduce these issues for future generations. I do this by frequently exposing kids to feminism and positive examples of the impressive variety of humans among us. I look forward to hearing from you and learning about your family!
