I have a medium-sized dog, a mix of border collie and shepherd, and a long-haired domestic cat. They have never been with anyone, but the cat hides, so there is no need to interact with her. Just replace the food and clean the litter box. The dog, if she lets him take her for a walk, only pees and does her business at home, so change her diaper once a day.
