I am Dominique Cooper. I am a first-time freshman at CSUMB majoring in Liberal Studies and minoring in Music, with hopes of becoming a K-8 Orchestra Teacher. I am currently taking Intro to Child Development, where I am learning about the cognitive and physical development of young children. I am also enrolled in Arts in the School, where I learn how to incorporate arts and crafts, music, and dance into early childhood literacy and math lessons. I want to be a teacher because I want to inspire children to learn in a creative, fun environment where they enjoy learning. My early education began at the Montessori school in Redlands, CA. From primary to elementary, I grew up in the Montessori environment where I learned that a natural, play-based environment gives children the best learning experience. If you have Montessori materials, I am well-versed in facilitating Montessori-based lessons to young children. Read more I want to instill this concept in my classroom in the public school setting and also with all children I have the pleasure to work with. I was also a part of the arts, like dance and theatre, but specifically music, where I learned how to play the piano from ages 5-9, and then learned how to play cello at 10, at the University of Redlands School of Music for 3 years, which included lessons and cello camps over the summer. More recently, I was a part of the Forte Piano Symphony Orchestra as First Chair Cellist and Section Leader at Summit High School, where we performed at competitions in different locations, like New York City, Carnegie Hall, and New Orleans, Louisiana. In high school, I was also a cheerleader, Link Crew/Student Leader, and President of the Black Student Union club. My experience with babysitting and/or childcare consists of caring for children ages 2-5. I have babysat for multiple families, where I cared for and engaged with children. We would color, paint, play with puzzles, and do many other age-appropriate activities. I have also done childcare at my community church for children in kindergarten, where we would play games and host activities for the children to learn about different topics being discussed through crafts and music. Additionally, I am currently doing service learning hours at an elementary school where I observe and learn how to teach and construct a kindergarten class. I am also CPR/First Aid/AED Certified for pediatrics (Children and Infants) certified.
