Hello! I am a former early childhood teacher, and I’ve recently moved to Maine. I taught for nearly a decade in a Waldorf forest school, but have also taught in Reggio schools, and I regularly travelled to and taught traditional crafts/skills to students in home programs. Over the years I’ve worked with most ages; from the baby room that had ages birth to 2, to pre school, to kindergarten! I’ve nannied quite a bit (mostly during Covid) with ages 3-15. I’ve also worked as a one-on-one with both children and adults on the spectrum. A little about my philosophy when working with children: It’s my wish to not use any kinds of screens with kids, as I know there is quite enough of that in the world. This also means I am committed to not using my smartphone around children. This is extremely important to me! For the youngest children Read more I generally follow the Pikler method (this is what I was trained in when I got my teacher training) and believe children are fully capable of doing so, so much- save for a little gentle guidance from adults if needed. This may look like: allowing a child to work on zipping up their own coat instead of rushing out the door, finding ways to make the adult world more accessible to children (safe cooking help with the right tools, little tricks with putting on clothing/shoes), trusting in kids’ own moral compass and allowing a child space to come to the right decision instead of forcing it upon them, and engaging babies’ “help” when doing diaper changes. On the other hand, I know children are thrust into so much when they get to school, so I like to help foster a dreamy sense of imagination via song, rhyme, and slow crafts, to help them develop their inner world before they start to focus entirely on the outer world. I love to spend lots of time outdoors with kids and believe it’s the best playground! Of course the parent(s) know best, so I will always defer to your judgement, regardless of what is specified here! A bit about me: I’m a stone mason by trade, and I look after a small flock of sheep and other animals at my homestead with my partner. I love crafting and art, like candle dipping (a favorite to do with kids), sewing, woodcuts, stone carving, etc. I am a certified wilderness first responder/have my cpr and infant cpr/first aid. I am also enrolled in an EMT certification. I have my own reliable vehicle that fits up to four car seats. I work for myself so my schedule is super flexible! More info/references available
