I have been working with children since I was a teenager. It has been an opportunity for growth as an individual and hopefully for the wonderful families I have had the pleasure of working with. I have experience with all ages from newborns to teenagers as well as children who live with Autism. I was fourteen years old when I was given the opportunity to spend time with a child who was very young and active while living with Autism. Being able to work with him and his parents was one of the best experiences of my teenage life. There are so many situations a family can go through and that very experience taught me compassion, patience, and discipline. Working with children in general has taught me other things such as problem-solving skills. Some questions I have had to answer and learn include, but not limited to what happens if Read more a child gets hurt, sick, or misbehaving, how does someone handle it? Is one method the right method and when to act? I would say all families are different and there is not just one way handling all problems. I also have learned how to time manage when it comes to helping with homework, preparing meals, bath time, play time, and getting the kids to the bus stop. There is a lot that goes into working with children, but it is an experience I wouldn't trade for the world. I have done overnight care and multiple families as well. One of things I think children would say about me is I treat them like any other person I speak to. I don't just look at kids as kids. They are people with beliefs and values. In other words, kids respect me. In the last two years, I have worked in with a non-profit agency under DCF offering services to families in need. In the last 6 months, I have gone into homes offering in home parenting, budgeting, behavior modification, and case management services to families who are need. Although challenging, working in social work has taught me a lot.
