Sholanda has been working with Lucas, a special needs early elementary student, for three years. In that time, I have witnessed nothing but total respect for Lucas and his condition. It is not easy to work with a child that doesn’t have the intellectual ability to fully understand consequences and yet Sholanda has a way with children and communicates love and respect by setting boundaries and expectations that are realistic. Sholanda does not have to raise her voice. She speaks in a calm but firm manner and allows the child to make choices. Sholanda understands how to redirect a child and can often diffuse a situation before a child becomes frustrated which often will lead to misbehavior. Sholanda believes a child wants to be good but often has to be taught and shown what that means and how to do that. This family has been blessed to have Sholanda as a caregiver for Lucas.
