One of my go to first experiences when I meet a family is to make play dough. I learnt a simple and easy recipe when I taught Day Care in the 90's. It is quick and engaging, not as messy as one would think and is quite sustainable since the end product is fun and developmentally appropriate. Ingredients are usually available sans food coloring which I always have with me for just such an occasion.
