As a professional nanny, a camp counselor, and daycare provider for decades, I have had the opportunity to learn so much through these years from the children and young people and their families. Since I didn't go into a career of teaching formally I always have enjoyed helping and encouraging children from day care and home settings to youth camps, etc. I have been caring for children since I've been nine, helping families daily as well as when they have gone on vacation for a week at a time, and I have taught toddlers to school aged children as a day care owner and teacher. Besides the everyday experience of working with kids, I also took child development classes in school and at the university level, besides majoring in psychology. As a mom of three adult children and young grandchildren now I have an array of experiences that have given Read more me a deeper insight to the development of a child and equipped me with a sense of compassion, ingenuity and empathy. When I owned daycare in my home. I had the responsibility of taking care of toddlers and even potty trained them, plan daily activities and objectives that I reached for each child, teaching and preparing them for preschool, and kindergarten. At the time I was also caring for a very colicky infant as well as middle to higher elementary aged children before and after school. Over the years as I have done nanny work, I have also done lighthouse keeping and cooking. During the Covid period when the children I've watched had to do online school I was responsible for their daily activities and homework making sure that they completed their work for the day and prepared for tests and projects, as well as checking in for attendance, etc and relaying messages to the parents, and taking the children to outings and events they couldnt go to themselves because of work expectations. To me it's not just about showing up but spending time with the children, doing fun activities, laughing, learning, enjoying the day and just being there for them. We have done everything from crafts to science experiments, going to the park, following a recipe and making fun food together, to visiting local nature exhibits and preserves, playing mini golf and so much more... All in all, I have really been blessed to have the chance to hopefully enrich children's lives and in the end I've gained more than words can express.
