Aloha! 🌺 My name is Maja (pronounced Maya). Originally from Sweden, I’ve called the U.S. home for over 30 years, and English is now my primary language but I am also fluent in Swedish and Polish. I also know some a Hebrew, Danish, Norwegian and Japanese. I bring more than 25 years of experience as a professional caregiver, educator, and mentor for children of all ages and abilities. I’m certified in First Aid and Lifeguarding, and I am deeply passionate about nurturing young minds in a safe, caring, and enriching environment. My teaching philosophy centers on empowering children through curiosity, kindness, and connection—to themselves, to others, and to the natural world. One of my greatest goals is to inspire kids to step away from screens and reconnect with the outdoors, where learning and play come alive. My background includes working extensively with children and adults on the autism spectrum, as Read more well as supporting individuals with special needs through my work with ARC of Kona. I also have a strong foundation in marine biology and environmental education. A few years ago, I taught 6th graders in Kohala and Waikoloa through the after-school program Ocean Warriors, helping students explore ocean conservation and stewardship. In addition to my child care work, I hold a diploma from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and have years of experience as an artist and photographer. I’m also fluent in three languages, and have lived in 4 different countries, which has helped me connect with families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Hawaii is my permanent home but I am always open to temporary travel. Above all, my approach is grounded in love, patience, and safety. I believe every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and inspired. Mahalo for taking the time to learn more about me. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like more information. Contact: majasommerfeld3@gmail.com
