I have been taking care of children since I was 10 years of age. Whether it was babysitting or watching them for a length of time, it is something that has always come naturally. Whilst in high school I taught art in schools around the North Eastern counties of Ohio. This became a big part of my life. I became a substitute teacher in Vermont later on. Due to the response of the children I was asked to take responsibility of children with disabilities. Being a cook at a Buddhist retreat center, it was also a challenge to feed 20 children at a family camp for a week. This included three meals and two snacks. Each one left by giving me a hug and saying the food was wonderful. I find that it is important to encourage a child's awareness of the world and to learn in a safe manner through their intuitive curiosity. Ask as many questions, but learn as you do, is a motto that I live by. Another very important rule of thumb is to always remain flexible yet have a sturdy foundation to build from.
